Mushroom Walk with North Spore

  • Hinckley Park Highland Ave South Portland, Maine 04106 (map)

Join us at beautiful Hinckley Park at the South Portland Land Trust for a morning of mushroom foraging and identification tips! This mushroom walk is designed to be an introduction to the mycological world of Maine, with a particular focus on edible mushrooms.

The first half hour or so of class will be devoted to covering basic fungal biology and life cycle, mushroom myths and truths, and foraging practices. From there, we’ll head into the forest and scan for mushrooms, discussing our finds as we go. The species we are likely to find vary depending on season and location. By the end of class, participants will walk away with growing confidence in several choice species and inspiration to learn more.

Instructor Louis Giller has spent about a decade studying, growing, foraging, and most importantly eating mushrooms. His mycological journey began at the University of Denver where he studied environmental science and conducted oyster mushroom research inspired by mycologist Paul Stamets. Here at North Spore, he primarily works on education, customer service, and community outreach.

We suggest you wear long pants and sturdy shoes or boots. Please bring a basket, knife, water, notebook, and paper bags. Parking at Hinckley is limited, if you are attending with friends/family please carpool.

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED and is handled through North Spore. Please use the link below to register and print/fill out their waiver and purchase your ticket ($25/per person).
