Trail Heads

the Veteran's Memorial Bridge and Main Street Multi-Use Paths HAve two PRIMARY ACCESS POINts:

Main Street in South Portland: The southern end of the multi-use path currently is on the southeast corner of the Broadway and Main Street (“Cash Corner”) intersection. The path can be accessed anywhere along Main Street north of that intersection until you get to the ramp that heads west from Main Street to provide access to the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge.

Fore River Parkway in Portland: To access the multi-use path in Portland, use the walking and biking trails along Commercial Street and the Fore River Parkway to get to the entrance to Veteran’s Memorial Bridge at the Parkway.

About the Trail

This multi-use path initially was only included on the bridge as its protected walking and biking facility. It next was extended at the South Portland end to take it down to Main Street. Most recently, the path has been continued along Main Street to just past the intersection with Broadway at Cash Corner. Similar to the multi-use path linking Portland and South Portland on the Casco Bay Bridge, this path is a paved, barricade-protected walkway that can be used by both pedestrians and bicyclists. However, it is a few feet wider than the one on the Casco Bay Bridge. One spot that isn’t protected is an unsignalized crosswalk that is the only way people heading south on the path can continue from the end of the bridge to the ramp down to Main Street. Although there are flashers and warning signs, it is an area where vehicles often are accelerating to reach highway speeds, so extreme caution must be used.

As mentioned above, please use caution and common sense when using the multi-use paths. Neither the City of South Portland nor the South Portland Land Trust are responsible for accidents or injury that may occur on its paths. Enjoy the paths, but use them at your own risk. Thank you.
